Teacher Candidates
5.1 Teacher candidates should have an understanding of how and the extent to which planned MTSS procedures, program assessments and components (activities and roles) are implemented as intended consistently in the school setting by whom.
5.2 Teacher candidates use the MTSS framework for educators to engage in data-based decision-making related to program improvement, high-quality instruction and intervention, social and emotional learning, and positive behavioral supports necessary to ensure positive outcomes for students.
5.3 More specifically, educators and teacher candidates will evaluate if they are delivering interventions with fidelity by completing a self assessment or observation of implementation.
Leader Candidates
5.1 Leader candidates will be able to provide adequate training and follow-up coaching to staff to ensure that assessments are used as intended, including administration and scoring.
5.2 Implementing MTSS procedures, program assessments and components (activities and roles) requires monitoring of essential components, instruction and interventions, and administering and analyzing assessments.
5.3 Gathering data is necessary to check that supports are provided to students as intended. This also includes measuring MTSS, its components, and the use of assessments with a formal self-evaluation by the MTSS leadership team using a fidelity rubric.
Examples of how to include in programs/coursework:
- Syracuse University: Data based decision making
- SUNY New Paltz: Reading/Lecture/Case Stories/Internship experiences
