Overview
This interactive online resource outlines considerations for key aspects of developing and implementing a process for granting credit for prior learning (CPL) (sometimes called prior learning assessment [PLA]) in Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Programs (RTAPs) and other Registered Apprenticeship Programs focused on education professions. This resource:
- Summarizes methods for awarding CPL toward supplemental education and on-the-job training components of a Registered Apprenticeship Program
- Promotes the use of CPL to increase accessibility for a broader pool of candidates and facilitate program completion
- Highlights best practices and strategies for incorporating a quality-driven system for granting CPL in a Registered Apprenticeship Program
Note that this resource is designed to address awarding CPL toward specific components of the Registered Apprenticeship Program and not overall degree or certification attainment (except when degree attainment is part of the RTAP).
Who can use this resource?
This resource is designed for RTAP sponsors, employers (e.g., districts), and supplemental education providers (e.g., Educator Preparation Programs) to support the consideration and awarding of CPL for Registered Apprenticeship Programs in teacher occupations.
As a reminder, RTAP structures can differ greatly, including the organization that serves as the RTAP sponsor and which organizations are partners in an RTAP. When reviewing this resource, keep in mind the structure of your RTAP and the roles of your partners, and tailor the suggestions and questions for consideration to fit your RTAP’s context.
